Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation establishes a partnership with the Brazilian Ministry of Health
The Foundation signed the Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Health, formalizing the Brazil Strategic Alliance. Since then, it has been collaborating with Brazilian stakeholders to advance shared priorities such as the development of vaccines, vector control and research in maternal and child health and nutrition.

Gates Foundation signs memorandum of Grand Challenges Brazil
The Foundation formed an alliance with the Secretary of Science, Technology and Strategic Supplies of the Ministry of Health and the National Council of Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) to create Grand Challenges Brazil. This initiative aims to finance cutting-edge projects in the areas of health and development. Since 2014, 70 projects have been co-funded. Many of these have already had an impact on the health system.

Tuberculosis rapid test pilot project is conducted in Manaus and Rio de Janeiro
The aim of the project was to evaluate the feasibility of the GeneXpert test to enhance tuberculosis diagnosis. The tool proved to be cost-effective and more accurate in accelerating access to appropriate treatment. The results were published in Plos Medicine setting an important precedent for wider use of the test.

The “Eliminate Dengue” Project begins in Brazil
“Eliminate Dengue,” an initiative founded by the World Mosquito Program (WMP) and supported by Fiocruz, introduces the Wolbachia bacteria into Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to prevent them from spreading the virus. Brazil pioneered the pilot use of this strategy.

Gates Foundation partners with Bio-Manguinhos to develop vaccine for measles and rubella (MR) for global market
Bio-Manguinhos was one of the few global manufacturers of the rubella vaccine, whose license for production was acquired through a technology transfer with GSK. The Gates Foundation approved a USD $1 million grant to Bio-Manguinhos to support the first stages of the vaccine development.

Ministry of Health makes rapid test available for diagnosing tuberculosis
The Ministry of Health made the rapid test for diagnosing tuberculosis, known as GeneXpert, available at SUS, which could detect the disease in only two hours. With this, Brazil became the second largest incorporator of GeneXpert in the world.

Second call by Grand Challenges Brazil is launched with focus on child development
The initiative published another call for proposals called “Healthy Development for All Children”. Twelve projects were funded in this round, focusing on solutions during pregnancy and shortly after birth, interventions during the baby’s first months, and monitoring indicators during childhood.

WHO Pre-qualification process of influenza vaccine begin
PATH, initially with support from the Gates Foundation, and later the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), provided technical assistance to Butantan to improve processes and develop the documentation needed to apply for prequalification of the trivalent influenza vaccine to WHO. The vaccine was prequalified in 2021.

MMV and PATH visit Colombia and Peru to investigate the malaria context in the countries
The organizations conducted an exploratory visit to Peru and Colombia to understand the local contexts of P. vivax malaria management. Later, the two organizations formed the PAVE consortium to support evidence generation and broaden the dissemination of information about new tools to treat vivax malaria.

Brazil pays the first installment of the donation commitment agreed with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance
In 2006, the Brazilian government committed to donating 20 million dollars to Gavi, through IFFIm. In 2018, after the necessary institutional paperwork, Brazil was able to formalize the annual donation for the first time. GHS began managing the partnership between Gavi and MoH in 2014.

Grand Challenges launches call on data science to improve maternal and child health
The call funded 14 innovative projects in the area of data science for evidence generation and innovation in maternal and child health. One of the funded researchers, Gilberto Kac, developed a new methodology of gestational weight curves, which will be incorporated into the SUS pregnant women’s guidelines booklet in 2022.

Start of the project, ‘Partnership to Eliminate Vivax’
The project initially launched under the name VivAccess was officially started in Brazil, Colombia and Peru. This was the first GHS-supported project implemented simultaneously in different Latin American countries.

Brazil approves tafenoquine to treat vivax malaria
Anvisa approved the single-dose drug tafenoquine for the radical cure of P. vivax malaria in patients aged 16 years and over. Brazil becomes the first malaria-endemic country to approve the drug. The approval occurred in a context of articulation between the Gates Foundation, MMV and PATH with the manufacturer to develop a pilot in the country.

Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) begins press conferences on COVID-19

Tafenoquine is approved in Peru
Peru’s General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (DIGEMID) approved tafenoquine as the first single-dose drug to prevent relapses of P. vivax malaria in patients 16 years of age and older. The approval came in the context of the Gates Foundation, MMV, and PATH working with the manufacturer to develop a study of operational feasibility in the country.

The TRuST Study is launched in Manaus (AM) and Porto Velho (RO)
The Brazilian Ministry of Health, in partnership with Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), begin a study to understand the feasibility of providing a real-world, new radical cure treatment for P. vivax malaria using tafenoquine. The results will inform the Ministry’s decision on whether or not to adopt the treatment into the public health system.

STAR Project begins
The STAR project aims to generate evidence on local testing strategies that can support public policy to combat the pandemic of COVID-19 in Brazil, through a research protocol and other policy change actions. The protocol evaluates the effectiveness of contact tracing through serial self-testing in primary health care facilities in Porto Velho and Curitiba.

Bio-manguinhos registers MR vaccine
After the initial investment by the Gates Foundation in 2013, Bio-Manguinhos continued the development process of the measles and rubella (MR) vaccine. In 2022, the vaccine was approved by Anvisa and will seek WHO approval to be made available on the global market.
